What Is the Masterclass, You Ask?
Even when you’ve studied permaculture and land design, building a regenerative property from Square One is no easy task…rather like playing 3D chess on moving chessboards! So our Building Your Permaculuture Property products have been carefully designed to give you the advanced strategy, tactics, and empowerment to overcome overwhelm and create a thriving, regenerative property.
But complexity isn’t the only challenge: solo learning can be lonely and fraught with doubt and second-guessing. Over and over our clients and students have expressed the same wish…
All I need is someone to walk me through each step in the process – explain the principles, practices, tools, and templates – answer my questions (so many questions!!) – give me feedback on my design – and then give it a final professional review before I apply it to my property!
And that is why we’re launching the seven-month,
deep-dive Building Your Permaculture Property Masterclass,
running August 16, 2021 to April 18, 2022.
This was the most impactful course I have ever taken!
It has been life changing to get all of our thoughts sorted out.
Now I have an approach to land design that feels productive instead of me spinning my wheels
Rob and Takota’s in-depth, 2-hour lecture/Q&A sessions are just the beginning in this course.
We’ve packed more interaction and support into these eight months than we’ve ever included in any of our programs…
While we’ve always said that the best person to design your land is you, we’ve never said that you need to do it alone. And in this Masterclass, we’ve pulled out all the stops to make sure you have all the human support (not to mention all the information resources) you could possibly need!
In fact, up to now, the outcomes we are offering in this program were only available to clients who were paying between $25,000-50,000 for two-on-one guidance from Rob and Takota.
But regenerative farming has never been more needed than it is today.
And the overwhelming response to the BYPP product suite has shown us: land owners need this information. Urgently.
It’s time for us to make this information and support accessible. So we are offering the Masterclass at a staggering reduction: just $1953 CAD, or 7 payments of $279 + taxes.
But we need to warn you – because this is such a highly structured, interactive program, with professional review of each student’s project, the class size is limited to keep the student-to-faculty ratio low.
Registration opens at the Global Summit, and we expect seats to fill quickly. If you are ready to move beyond DIY doubts, frustration, and overwhelm, to a structured process led by seasoned professionals who have led thousands of clients to successful outcomes – do not wait to sign up!
MEET YOUR INSTRUCTORS & PROGRAM GUIDES
After pursuing international training and certifications in renewable energy and regenerative design, Rob Avis, and his wife Michelle, began Verge Permaculture, now a globally-recognized and award-winning design, consulting, and education company. Since then, he’s helped more than 1000 students and a growing number of clients to design and/or create integrated systems for shelter, energy, water, waste and food, all while supporting local economy and regenerating the land. Rob holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering, a professional diploma of permaculture design from PINA and is the author of two books.
Takota Coen is a permaculture educator, Red Seal Carpenter, second-generation organic farmer, and co-owner and operator of Coen Farm, an award-winning 250-acre permaculture farm that produces nutrient-dense raw-milk-fed pork, grass-fed beef, pastured eggs, forest garden berries, and herbal teas. He lives near Edmonton, Alberta.
PAST STUDENTS SAY…
It has been life changing to get all of our thoughts sorted out.
We feel better now that we've done more planning and design. Google Earth Pro is a powerful design tool and we can really see the potential that we have on our property.
I struggled with information overload as I trawled through Pinterest, YouTube, permies forum looking for ideas. Verge’s approach is very structured and disciplined and the program really helped me overcome that overwhelm.
I'm convinced that this program will be a must have for any permaculture landscape designer.
If you have the time and the means, just do it. If you're working on a project already, it's a strong asset in your toolkit.
Although we knew that we had acquired a good property, this course helped to see the incredible value embodied here. Paradoxically, through a focus on the weakest link, the course helped us to activate that value by focusing on one small part of the overall platform. Through this restrained and disciplined approach to design, the overwhelming became manageable. Rob and Takota take a unique approach to design which is proving very effective.
I found Rob and Takota extremely helpful, encouraging, and interested in how each student was doing. I particularly enjoyed discussing our weekly assignments with my accountability partners. Overall, I would highly recommend this class to anyone interested in property design.
Russell and I have a lot of respect for Rob & Takota. We really appreciate the work they do, especially their guidance and encouragement throughout the program. It has been good for our relationship as well as for the farm and the seed company. We still have mountains to climb, but we now have a clearer vision, less friction and better tools and processes helping us work in the same direction and tackle our biggest challenges.
Before the course, I felt like we were reacting to whatever seemed most important at the time. Taking the course focused our efforts on the most important items we needed to address and gave us a framework to analyze new decisions and decide where they fit into the overall plan.Water Harvesting Canada
Is this program a fit for you?
- Can you commit 3-4 hours a week to attend a majority of the sessions over the seven months and complete the self-directed project work?
The detailed schedule is here, but generally you must be available at the following times, in Mountain Time, starting in September 2021, until April 2022:
- Mondays, 3 pm MT start: 2 hour live lecture and Q&A sessions with Rob & Takota
- Wednesdays, 4:00pm start: 45 minute 8-member accountability group sessions
- Self-directed / project work: 1-2 hours per week
Lecture & Q&A sessions will be recorded and posted to the student dashboard (with indefinite access) in the event you miss a session, but in general missing a session should be the exception, and not the rule.
- Do you have decent computer skills and internet access?
We will be using Google Earth Pro and/or other computer-based software tools for this course.
If your computer skills are limited, and you are extremely intimidated by the idea of designing your property using a Geographic Information System software, you need to be willing to invest the time to change the situation, otherwise this course is likely not a fit for you.
Note that the Masterclass does include our own Google Earth Pro Mini-Course and students who invest the additional time required to complete the tutorial have all been successful with using Google Earth Pro. And of course, if you are more sophisticated, you are welcome to use a different GIS program for your design project.
- Have you taken a Permaculture Design Course?
This is not an introduction to permaculture course, and we expect students to have at least foundational knowledge of permaculture design.
Having said that, we are including full access to the recordings from our recent online permaculture design course – over 100 hours of content. If it’s been a long time since you’ve taken a Permaculture Design Course (or if you’ve never taken one), you must be willing to review these recordings before the Masterclass weekly sessions start in September.
- Are you in the process of building your permaculture property (or designing land for others?)
Throughout the course, we will be guiding you through the design of a real-life project. Most of our students are designing the property that they live-on, or intend to live on, and a large majority of these properties are acreages or farms.
If you are considering taking this program and your project is urban and/or smaller than an acre, please get in touch with us. If you send us a description of your project we’ll be able to give you a better idea if this program is a fit for you.
All times are in Mountain Time.
In general, the first live Lecture & Q&A Session is on Monday, August 16th, from 3:00 – 5:00pm. There is then a ~four week break before Monday weekly sessions begin on September 13th, from 3:00 pm – 5:00pm.

You will need to procure a contour map for your property, the cost of which is not included in your course tuition.
There are a bunch of different ways to get a map (depending on where you live) and we will guide you through all the different ways to do this in the first session in August session.
Please note that there could be third party fees / costs associated with getting maps for your property. These could very cost effective, but could also be pricey, depending on where you live and the availability (or unavailability) of free or open-source data. Again, we will overview your options in the first live session.
You can pay online with your credit card.
If you’d prefer to pay using another methods select that option during checkout and you’ll receive instructions on how to do so. Ntoe that we can can accept cash, bank-certified cheques, email money transfer (Canadians only) or credit card over the phone.
Your spot is not saved in the course until payment is received.
We can also accept payment plans for some of our courses. The payment plan option will be displayed at checkout if that is the case.
