In this course we share our design process from start to finish for a rainwater harvesting (RWH) system for a home.

Note that our bias is always to consider a RWH system as part of a much larger strategy for security, resilience and sustainability, and as such we present not only the nuts and bolts of the calculating roof, tank, and conveyance sizing, but the background strategy and system planning that we think should go into any good design. 

The recommendations we make here regarding the design of a RWH system are based on a few things. First off, there’s our personal experiences combined with the experiences of other professionals and installers with whom we have collaborated with & with whom we trust.  In addition, this course reflects decades of research and extensive monitoring done by independently funded researchers, particularly in Australia, where over 3 million people drink rainwater everyday. The vast majority of these RWH systems do not include end-of-line disinfection components (such as an ultraviolet sterilizer) and the health of Australians reliant on rainwater is the same or better than those relying on water supplied by the municipal water system.

A well designed and sensibly maintained home-scale roof-harvested rainwater system includes interventions at each step (roof, gutters, downpipes, storage tank, pumps, plumbing, etc). Water quality improves as a droplet of water moves through the RWH system in part because of a naturally occurring set of treatment processes going on in the rainwater tank. Good design and sensible maintenance practices that contribute to, as well as support, this inherent RWH system “treatment train” will result in water that is of acceptable quality for drinking and other domestic indoor and outdoor uses without the need for end-of-line disinfection and sterilization.

The focus of this course is therefore to explain what is a well-designed system (resulting in a RWH treatment train) and how to provide sensible maintenance for that system. 

As a homeowner or rainwater practitioner,  you need to make informed choices about the correct design for your particular situation, which might include end-of-line disinfection, or may not. This course aims to improve that understanding.
