About The Position:

  • A contract position starting in September 2013 and ending December 2013, estimated 10 hours per week, and paying $12-15 per hour, depending on experience.

  • Work is done from home, over the internet.

  • There is a possibility that the contract be extended, based on the initial success of the program.

About Us:

Verge Permaculture is a Calgary-based company that specializes in a systems design approach to sustainable human habitat and a focus on interconnected elements: low energy buildings, water management, waste re-use, renewable energy & food production systems. This past spring we hosted world-famous farmer, Joel Salatin, for three days of workshops in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This Fall we are launching a very exciting web-based program using footage from the workshop – and we need some help to pull it off!

What you’ll be doing:

  • As forum moderator you will oversee the communication activity of the student forum. You’ll monitor the interchange of contributors and makes decisions regarding content and the direction of threads.

  • Provide an online training session to students on how to use the forum / online community and help students with questions regarding using the forums.

  • Have direct interaction with students for the purposes of building engagement, driving participation, and growing the body of farming-related content on the student forum.

  • Find and implement ways to connect and engage students and the knowledge resources they need.

  • Move discussions from one section to another to keep topics organized.

  • Assist with day-to-day community moderation tasks as needed. Review and moderate all user-generated content.

  • Compile questions from the forum / online community and design interview questions for the Salatins. Help answer student questions about farming. 

  • Host two telephone call-ins per month where you will interview both Joel and Daniel Salatin regarding the most popular forum topics and questions.

Who we are looking for:

  • Someone with strong small-scale farming experience and ample knowledge around farming-related topics such as: raising chickens, raising pigs and or cattle (basically you need to be able to speak the lingo and help with student questions).

  • A service-minded individual who is willing to put in extra effort to help students at every turn.

  • A clear, friendly, and diplomatic communicator who is skilled at: making people feel welcome, resolving conflict, and easing user frustration

  • An excellent writer who can express him/herself clearly.

  • Someone with experience using and administering online community / social media platforms.

  • Someone who is very familiar and comfortable with the internet, social media, and online communities.

  • Someone who learns quickly, eagerly picks up new technologies & tools, is self-directed, and passionate about nurturing & building community.

  • Experience with blogging (or other forms of customer-facing content creation) is highly preferred.

Bonus Points:

  • Being an Albertan (or living close enough that we get to meet you in person).

  • Basic knowledge of HTML.

  • Previous experience moderating an online community.

  • Experience with social outreach, such as promotion on Twitter, Facebook, etc.

  • Participated in some or all of our 3 days of workshops with Joel Salatin in March (online or in person).
