Joel’s been bucking the mainstream since before he took on the leadership of Polyface Farms in 1982, and his war stories literally fill a book. As he says, Polyface and its international reputation “would not exist if the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services had their way.“

Why the confrontation? Well, as Joel says, up until the 1940’s organic and chemically-based approaches to farming had been equally respected….but after WWII, the USDA swerved to follow the profitable petrochemical approach, changing the course of farming in the U.S. and the world in the process…

Joel’s grandfather, Frederick Salatin, was among those who stayed on the organic path. Joel’s father followed suit, purchasing a run-down, hard-scrabble property in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and, with the help of the family, going dead-against industry experts’ advice and USDA principles to create the fertile, self-sustaining farm that would become Polyface.

As Joel trained to take on the stewardship of the farm, he witnessed the impact of USDA teachings in practice – dead animals outside factory farm buildings, the pervasive smell of drugs and manure – and he came away vowing to have nothing to do with the “agro-industrial monster.” During his 30-year leadership of Polyface Farm, he has passionately charted a beyond-organic course, challenging federal and state requirements over issues ranging from the local sale of clean, healthy, and well cared-for meats, to his right to opt out of a highly bureaucratic system seemingly designed to not only regulate, but obliterate the small-scale farmer.

The live-stream event will be accessed through our website using your user account. (If you haven’t already created a user account, you will be taken through the steps when you register). We are in the process of developing detailed instructions for accessing the live-stream event,which will be emailed to you before the event.

Hey, we get it: When you’re living in apocalyptic times (or any other kind of times), life happens. Solar flares, earthquakes, superstorms, total economic collapse, a flu epidemic, or a bunch of Internet servers having a bad cable day. Stuff like that. It happens to the best of us.

So we realize that circumstances in your life or your organization may prevent you from participating in this live streaming event, or that acts of Mother Nature may prevent us from delivering it.

But when you’ve invested time, energy, and money in an event and you’re faced with such circumstances, what do you do?

General Cancellation Policy

As with all of our events, we reserve the right to cancel this live streaming program at any time due to low enrollment or adverse circumstances. Should we cancel, everyone who’s registered will receive a full refund.

What If Verge Has Technical Difficulties?

We’ve taken every possible step to ensure a high quality live-streaming program will be delivered, one way or another….

Backup Servers

Because high quality live streaming requires a great deal of technological coordination, there is always a risk of internet connection failure or disturbance, or other difficulties that may result in Verge being unable to deliver the program. In order to prevent such downtime, our experienced professional technical team will secure 2-3 backup internet providers to ensure that the show will go on.

Archive Copy

In addition to live streaming, the production is being recorded locally for archiving later. In the event of a temporary outage or intermittent live stream delivery problem, Premium Live-stream participants will be able to view the entire program or any portions missed through the archive after the event.

Full Archive Access or Full Refund

Even with our backup and contingency plans in place, there is always a small possibility that some extreme circumstance may completely prevent the delivery of the live stream.
If this should happen, the course will still be recorded locally. You have two options:

  • Maintain your registration, and you will receive a copy of the video recording (Premium Participants) or a link to view the recording (Basic Participants)
  • Request a refund, but you will not receive or be able to view a video recording of the course

What If You or Your Organization Cannot Participate?

General Technical Policy

You are responsible for making sure ahead of time that you have followed our technical guidelines and have the necessary equipment to participate in the live stream. If you have any questions about the technical requirements, please contact us well before the event, and we will provide whatever guidance is needed. However, Verge Permaculture will not assume responsibility nor offer a refund if you experience difficulties in setting up or accessing the live stream due to technical malfunctions.

If You Need to Cancel Your Personal Registration for Any Reason

  • If you notify us 7 days in advance: we will refund your course fee but will deduct an administrative fee of 10%
  • If you notify us less than 7 days in advance: we cannot provide a refund, but will allow you to send someone in your place OR apply the full amount as credit towards a future course.

If You Are Offering the Live Streaming Program to Your Organization or Community

If you choose to share the registration with your organization, your community group, or another group, please be advised that there is a small risk of problems with the live stream, and plan accordingly using the above policies. Again, we will answer whatever questions and provide whatever technical guidance we can, and we encourage you to have your own contingency policies in place.

Beyond doing our very best to anticipate and prevent technical difficulties, Verge will not assume responsibility for any aspect of the fundraiser/community events that are held using the live stream material from this program.
